Listen to Your Mother: Stand up straight: What progressives can win, Robert Creamer, 2007, ISBN 0979585295
Based on four decades of experience practice, this book shows how, for political progressives, right on the issues is less important than being the winner.
A campaign must concentrate on two types of voters: persuading or undecided voters, and mobilize the supporters that they must be motivated to go to the polls. If a campaign can strip the occasional Republican voter or two, that's great, but do not spend much time or money on it. A campaign needs to find, and address, the interests of free people: the physical, the need for structure, intellectual stimulation, control of your life, etc.
These days, is tempting for a campaign based around new media such as blogs, Twitter and Facebook. No, for whatever reason, leave the old methods Get Out the Vote, as phone banks, calling people several times during the campaign, knocking on doors. People like that were asked for their vote.
All the effort in the world is worthless if the candidate is boring or bland about issues. People like to feel that the candidate is on their side, they are not afraid to stick to their values, which have a vision and integrity, and that the candidate respects the voters. Next in importance after having a good candidate is having good organizers and field operation can cover the whole area (city, district, state).
It is tempting to think that the election of President Obama, and the current unpopularity of the national Republican Party, makes this book is not necessary or obsolete. Nothing could be further from the truth. It's easy, relatively speaking, to win an election, whether at the local level, state or national. The hard part is to follow the day to day to get voters to realize that liberalism can become the dominant political philosophy United States. In addition, Republicans will not stay forever unpopular. They'll be back, perhaps in 2010, perhaps in 2012, and progressives can not wait to return before starting to fight for the future of America. You must do everything possible to change the playing field now.
This book is an excellent place to start. Is full of information for people planning any kind of political campaign, and is very highly recommended.
