I grew up on a farm, is an autobiographical account of the life of the author has been working on a farm in Middletown, New York, during the 1950s. Written by author Alan Lewis and illustrated by artist Bob Fletcher I grew up on a farm gives life to the memories of the author of a timeshare in this critical and sadly lost to many today. I grew up on a farm offers the reader a fascinating glimpse of farm life as experienced by much of America to a good part of last century. And it offers a moment of remembering the past and those who enjoy remembering their own childhood spent as much as a writer Lewis has captured.
Written in child friendly text and richly illustrated, raised on a farm that takes the reader step by step with the writer as he gathers the eggs, play with your dog, pick up home garden products for sale on a post road. The reader is offered a vision of work and fun is on a family farm. We see fishing in the pond, taking care of tasks and whiling away the long summer days with family and friends.
I particularly liked the artwork found at work. Illustrated with photographs in black and white illustrator extended by Fletcher to the drawings in full color on every page is a delight. I grew up on a farm is a good heart tale of a time before disappearing from our country. Urban sprawl spreads further and further into areas where family farms once flourished
Tome I grew up on a farm for my fourth grade classroom where he became an instant success. We live in a rural area of Oklahoma, however, only One student really lives "in the country." The children were fascinated to hear the story and have taken turns reading the book for themselves since. We voted again the artwork and our consensus is "the artwork is great!
I grew up on a farm is a book to read to the youngest of 3 – 8s. It is a reading with some help for the 8s and 9s and of itself to the grades of most of the media. The book provides an excellent opportunity for children to discuss life today face life some years ago, and speculate on how life can change in the future.
I like the book every so often as has my class, happy to recommend.
I grew up on a farm is an excellent choice for the home pleasure library, the bookshelf class, school library shelves and reading list school at home.
